It is so easy to employ weaponized incompetence in sales. We want to get to the end goal in the fastest way possible. However, to grow as a salesperson, you truly need to separate yourself from this kind of behavior.
Your Identity
Do you give someone else the opportunity to define YOUR value? Your boss defines what you’re good at and what you’re not good at. The problem is, if they’re not skilled at recognizing your value, your identity isn’t truly defined. And before long, you’re managing your boss. You keep them in the dark about what you can or can’t do well.
How Your Value is Defined
Your boss does NOT define your identity. Neither does your company. And neither do your numbers. They can influence how your identity is expressed. But they can’t change your core.
Your Career is NOT a Solo Sport
We all grow in a community. And sales is relational. So we need to be active in our community. Read books by those who succeed in sales. Find a mentor to coach you. Or reach out to teams like Span the Chasm to help you and your sales team thrive. Employing tactics like this creates accountability for your actions. And a good sales coach will call you out on using weaponized incompetence in sales.
