How on earth does the weather affect your sales? We know; we talk about sales forecasts all the time. But those forecasts are not what we’re getting at this week. We actually ARE talking about the weather… Specifically, we’re going to look at how sales cycles are affected by climate.
Climate and Resources
The weather determines how communities interact with each other. Take the example of a culture that is rich in resources and in a warm-weather climate. Since their needs are being met, they’re not asking for assistance from people outside of their group. It’s not uncommon to find groups diverging from each other, creating sub-cultures and dialects varying from the common language.
However, a lack of resources creates a different culture. Imagine a culture the opposite of warm weather, where the ground is cold and doesn’t produce food for the majority of the year. Communication is essential. A scarcity of food creates a need for communication, so the population shares a common language. There is less disparity found between dialects out of necessity.
We’ll continue in this vein in the next few weeks. What are hot and cold cultures? What does the sales cycle look like with respect to these cultural differences? Bottom line, we want to help salespeople understand and respect the differences. Know where you come from, know where your clients come from, and know how to sell by honoring your client’s culture.
