My dentist used to tell me, “Only floss the teeth you want to keep.”
I always knew that better oral hygiene was good for me. But did I always do it? No.
I get a similar reaction from many people in sales, whether reps or leaders, when I ask them about their coaching and growth strategy.
Sort of a sheepish grin.
A stammering statement that ‘I should be doing something but….. ‘
Moving on to the next topic, please….
It’s an odd dichotomy..
- Everyone acknowledges the value of coaching
- Few seek it out
The issue is not lack of desire. My experience shows most aren’t sure what good coaching looks like. How to start and how to be truly open to the possibilities. We humans love our comfort zone but we can always perform better with an external push.
Don’t top performers all have coaches? Don’t they seek them out? Yes! They listen to them. And, because of it, they improve their individual and team performance. #Truth.
To make it clearer and to frame it up, here are 3 values that good coaching provides:
- Objective, external diagnosis: A good coach removes the emotion from the situation and leverages a broad background in similar scenarios to provide you clarity when your vision is murky.
- Accountable development plans: A good coach identifies the gap (skills, competencies, process, etc) and collaboratively builds a development plan to solve it. They work in tangent with you to create an accountability process that ensures completion. Accountability is success steroids.
- Encouragement: Good coaching provides encouragement. Truth: Everyone needs encouragement. Unfortunately, many of the internal systems that we work in don’t provide it.

We even GET coaching at Span the Chasm! I’ve been working with Brian Patrick Cork, my business coach, for months. He has provided me with great insight and advice as we navigate growth. EVERYONE benefits from working with the right coach.
Proof: I hired 2 new team members recently as part of our growth plan. Fear was holding me back, and I needed his sage advice, accountability and encouragement. Brian provided that through this process. I wouldn’t have made the crucial growth investment without him, his experience and guidance.
