Consider this. A colleague was out to lunch with a client the other day. They were wrapping up lunch, and my colleague asked for the check. The client also asked for a box. As they waited for the waiter to return, the client asked why they didn’t request a box as well.
My colleague, looking down at half a plate of leftover food, stated she was full. She mentioned if she returned home with it, she would pick at it all afternoon or it would sit in her refrigerator forgotten. And she added she was trying not to snack outside of meals.
Cold Climate and Scarcity
The client glanced disapprovingly. The colleague questioned, “Why do you ask?” The client responded, letting her know she had come from a poor family. While growing up in Minnesota, food at home was scarce occasionally, particularly during harsh winters. And going out to eat was a luxury rarely afforded.
Impact on Decision-making
Her culture was impacting how she regarded the colleague’s decision to leave the half plate of food. She was making a snap judgment that the colleague was being wasteful. Why does this matter? Steve offers some food for thought…
